Water and martial arts

Knowing how your body functions and the importance of keeping it hydrated when training in any sort of martial art such as karate, tae kwon do, kung fu, mixed martial arts and sport kickboxing can help you to achieve better results.

Next to oxygen, water is the most important nutrient for sustaining human life. Approximately 70-75% of the human body is comprised of water, which helps regulate body temperature, produce energy and flush waste from the body. During exercise the body can lose up to 2 litres of water per hour.

It is very important to remain hydrated and drink lots of water in preparation for exercise, and equally important to rehydrate as necessary during exercise to replenish depleted water in the body. Don’t wait until you are thirsty before drinking, as by this time you are already dehydrated. Compared to other beverages, cool water is the most quickly absorbed by the body.

Many people do not drink enough water. Drinking 8 cups of water each day is recommended, without taking exercise demands into consideration. For peak performance, a martial artist should be properly hydrated at all times. Poor hydration will result in fatigue, muscle soreness, and a slower recovery time from exercise.

Drinking adequate amounts of water will also help to regulate body weight. Water helps the body to metabolize stored fat by helping flush the liver. The liver is involved in fat metabolism, so if the liver is not properly hydrated then the effectiveness of a fat burning workout is reduced.

Drinking enough water will also help to relieve fluid retention. When the body is low on fluids, it tries to store whatever fluid it does have and fluid retention occurs. When you drink enough water, your body will not store any because it is hydrated properly and will not be pushed into a situation where water retention is necessary.

Water also helps flush the body of waste and toxins. It does this by flushing the kidneys and liver, which helps them expel the wastes collected from your body as urine.

Remember, for peak performance in martial arts, kickboxing … and life, drinking enough water is essential.
